Boy that is a loaded question. We really don't know but we can guess. They bark to let you know some one
has entered their turf and they don't like it.Whether that is another dog a dreaded cat or just some
stranger. Barking is your dogs way of saying "Hey this person ,dog, dreaded cat, doesn't belong here tell him to
hit the road."
Your dog will also bark to let you know that he is hungry or wants out.It is his way of
communicating to you.So when he barks and runs over to his water dish he is telling you I'M thirsty get me a
drink.NOW!My mom's dog Puddin was a master at this. She had different barks for most everything. And yes,she had mom
trained really well.
Some times dogs bark because they are lonely or bored.Think about it.When you're alone don't
you sometimes whistle or sing.Come on you know you do.Barking is a dog's version of whistling. They can't talk so
what else are they supposed to do?They may understand your tone of voice and some dogs can followinstructions
really well, but seriously have you ever had an actual conversation with a dog?
Barking, the good kind, where your dog is alerting you to some would be prowler is okay.As long as it is not
extreme.Nothing is more frustrating and embarrassing than for your dog to keep barking and you can't get him to
stop. This can get you into trouble with your neighbors or if your town is like mine you can get a fine. Not
good! This where training your dog to stop on command
comes into play.
Allow your dog to bark a couple of times and then command him to stop.If he doesn't give him a little
incentive.Try a squirt with a squirt gun.Not too much just enough to get his attention. But not everytime.Being
unpredictable is the key otherwise he will eventually ignore you.You could try using a small can like a pop can
partially filled with pebbles and sealed with tape.Shake it at your dog to get his attention, then command him to
stop.Again inconsistencty is the key to stopping dog barking.
When your pup does get the idea and stops on command make sure to praise him amd give him his favorite treat so
that he equates barking is good, stop barking is better.
Unfortunately we ourselves may be to blame for our dogs bad behaviour.Just like with a crying child that we pick
up and cuddle everytime that they cry,we tend to do the same with our dogs.I think you can see how our dogs quickly
learn like my mom's dog did that barking gets attention and attention usually means treat.Barking
,treat,barking,treat.
Probably the best way to prevent excessive barking is to
simply ignore at least some of your dogs barking especially when he is a pup and let him know that you are the
boss.If your dog is simply bored and lonely it might be time to do two things. One get him some toys that will
occupy him.And two, dare I say it, play with him, take him for a walk.In general let him know you love him and
want to be his bud.I mean why did you get him any way?
