Types Of Dog Training Collars

Dog training collars can be quite useful when training your dog.Used properly, they can help your dog to quickly learn what action you desire and what behaviour is acceptable. There are three basic kinds available.

Slip collars, also known as choke chains, are probably the most common. These are the metal collars that look like links of chain with two metal rings, one at either end. There are also nylon and leather versions of this type of dog collar.

The idea with choke collars is to have the rings on the back side of the dogs neck.It should be loose when walking normally.A gentle tug draws the collar tight letting your dog know to stop.Obviously you don't want to pull too hard as this could seriously hurt your dog.Pull just hard enough to get his attention.

A prong or pinch collar is very similar to choke collars in that they also close around the dogs neck to get his attention. The important difference is that the pinch collar has prongs on the inner surface pointing towards the dogs neck. This definetely will get your dogs attention in a hurry.Rest asured that the prongs won't puncture the dogs neck as these collars only close just so far unlike choke collars which can close down tight.

Electronic collars are another option to the first two types. An E collar looks like a regular collar but in fact has a small electrical system that emits a mild electrical charge to the dog at a touch of a button. These collars are great if you intend to train your dog "off leash".
When your dog misbehaves or just is not listening,a quick push of the button and he suddenly gets the idea.

Regardless which kind of dog training collar that you use,use it only when you are training your dog.Like anything else in life, when overused or abused the end result that you expect, you may not get.Dogs are like people in that eventually they will tolerate and then ignore the stimulous.

Leaving a training collar on all the time is not a good idea as accidents could happen. No one wants to see or be responsible for harming their dog.So just remember to remove the collar when you are done.A side benefit to removing the collar is that your dog will know that you mean business when it goes on!
