Training Your Dog to Stay

Training your dog to stay can be one of the most important commands that you can teach your dog .When he has mastered this then you can be confident that he will stay in a safe spot when necessary. This could be crucial in some situations like at a curb when you go for a walk and cars are whizzing by.Or when the door opens and the neighbors cat is in the yard waiting to tease him.

As important as the stay command is,getting your dog to learn it may prove difficult. The reason why is because by nature dogs are pack animals and will follow the leader which is you. When you move he moves. With patience and practice he will learn to stay. Please make sure that he has mastered the basic sit command first as that is part of the stay command.Trying to teach him too many things at once will only confuse him and frustrate you.So start with sit, make sure of that and then go on to stay.

Now with that said and your dog being the grand champion of sit,you can move on to stay with these steps.

1. With him in the sitting position, face your dog.Hold your hand palm up facing towards him. In a clear and firm voice tell him to stay. Then simply take one step back.

2.He is going to get up and follow you ,that is his natural tendency.Repeat the sit and stay commands.

3.At this point is where it can be tricky. In just a few tries some dogs will just get it and stay put,but others won't.They keep following you.If your dog insists on following you, try this little trick it may help.
You will need a long leash and a post or tree.Attach the leash to his collar and wrap it around the tree. Keep hold of the other end.Give your dog the sit and stay commands.Back up one step. When he starts to move give him a gentle tug on the leash as a reminder to stay.

4. Once your dog has gotten past one step try for two and then three etc.Patience and repetition are the key with the stay command.Continue trying to widen the gap, moving further and further away.

It goes against your dogs nature to sit and stay and not to follow you the leader.Just remember that you don't have to do this in one lesson.Do some every day.He will learn it and love you for the time you spend together and you will have a well behaved pal that knows the stay command.
