Training Your Dog to Sit

Training your dog for the sit command should be one of, if not the first thing a dog owner should do.It is an easy command and once he has learned this,your dog will pay attention better and be more obedient.As the sit command is the basis for all other commands it makes sense to start here.

A side benefit to the sit command is that it offers you an option especially if your pup loves to jump up on visitors,or decides that he wants to go strolling out in the front yard.Try these following tricks to teach your dog to sit it may make things easier.

1.While standing in front of your dog and in a firm tone of command tell him to sit.Now of course he is clueless at this point and will probably just stare at you.Time to give him a clue so see step two.

2.Stand in front of your dog facing him.Using one of his favorite treats,hold the treat slightly above his head and move it backwards toward his tail.This will make him look back as he follows the treat and cause him to sit.As he sits,praise him and give him the treat.

3.Sometimes this will backfire and your dog will just keep backing up. To counteract this, place him facing out from a corner and try step two again.Being in the corner should prevent him from moving too far back and he should then sit. Again when he is successful, heap on the praise .Let him know he did good at the sit command.

4. As a last resort you may have to simply encourage him by pushing his rear down while giving the sit command.Some dogs,like some people, need that extra little bit of direction.

Getting your dog to understand what you want may take a bit of trying and experimenting.Repetition of the previous steps,the action of sitting and the resulting praise should get the idea across to your dog.

Any time of the day is fine to train your dog to sit,just try to make a point of doing your training at the same time everyday if possible.Consistency is the key here.Don't work at it too long either,ten to fifteen minutes should do.Say your sit commands in the same way everytime so that it is clear to your dog what you want.
