Training Your Dog to Come

Training a dog to come (or recall) on command can be one of the more difficult things that you can teach your dog. It goes against his natural urge to go explore. But it goes without saying that training your dog to come could be one of the most important commands.

Picture this. You are out in your yard and that darned neighborhood cat comes by right in front of Fido.Well now you know Fido can't let that nasty cat just walk through his yard anytime he wants. He has to chase him and he does, right out into the street and just in time to get hit by a passing car.End of story.

Now if you had taken the time to properly train Fido to come he would be alive and you wouldn't be upset and crying. The best time to start teaching your dog to come obviously is when he is still just a pup.Just like any other commands, get them early before bad habits set in.

One bad habit(yours)that should be avoided is to use an angry tone when calling your dog. This will only confuse him.Yes, I know it can be frustrating to get your dog to come when you want him to. He is having fun snooping and you're late for your meeting, but commands said in anger translate into his mind as Uh Oh Big Trouble!Think about it, do you like to be called into the bosses office when he is yelling and screaming?

Practicing in your own yard is the best place to start.Hopefully he already has sniffed everything and won't be as distracted. You could simply start by letting him romp around and get a little distance from you and then call him. When he responds and comes to you, heap on lots of praise.Remember don't get angry and yell he doesn't speak people, just dog.

This works with some dogs, others may need more encouragement and guidance to learn to come. This is when a collar and training leash come into play.Clip the leash to his collar(Which He is wearing.Right?). Let him explore a bit. This why your yard may be the best place to practice, less distractions.Call your pup's name followed by come(or whatever you want to use,"here","by me",etc.).Give him a tug one his leash. This should get his attention and start him walking towards you.Gather in the leash as he nears you, telling him what a good pup he is,heaping on the praise.

Now if he doesn't respond at first give him a firmer tug on the leash and try again.Remember to praise him as he comes to you.If he tends to veer off as he comes to you, gently give another tug on his leash.Practice this 5 to 10 times per session,2 to 3 sessions per day.Consistency and properly applied praise are essential to teaching your dog to come on command.
