Stopping your dog from barking may be the hardest thing to do.But for your dog, doing the
neighborhood bark at all hours is fun.It is how they communicate with each other, their version of the evening
news.Constant barking on the other hand is just not cool.I'm sure the neighbors would agree.
Now if your dog is barking at something really
important such as a prowler in the area, that is fine.Go ahead and bark away. That is his job. You need to teach
him when it is appropriate to bark. There are ways to help break him of the desire to bark
continually at every sight and sound.
Many dogs will bark when they feel abandoned. It's that pack mentality thing again. The leader of their
little pack is leaving and barking is their way of saying take me with you. They don't like to be left behind any
better than anyone else.
You could practice leaving. What you do is to say good bye to your dog. Step outside your door and be
quiet, when your dog starts to bark quickly open the door and in a firm tone of command tell him to
be quiet. We tried this with our dog when we went camping and it worked. This may take a few tries and you can't be
predictable, otherwise your dog will catch on quickly and think this is a new game.
When you do leave your dog behind,if you have some old clothes you can part with, make a bed for him. With
his acute sense of smell he may feel more comfortable and it could calm him down.
You could try giving him a new toy to play with every once in awhile. He may just be bored and
barking is his way of relieving stress. If he likes rawhides or pigsears try those.Or try one of those toys
that you put his favorite treat into. One that he has to work at to get the treat. An occupied dog is more likely to
stop barking.
Try turning on the television or a radio.Keep the volume low enough not to bother the neighbors but loud
enough to help drown out noises from outside.Just the sound of voices may be all it takes tokeep him from barking.
If you let your dog out at night like we do,turn on a light if you have one.Hey, dogs can be afraid of
the dark too you know.I know our dog was. The first thing he did every night was to announce in his biggest voice
"I am dog hear me bark",just to scare anyone away. When there is something important to bark at, make sure you do
give him praise. That should get him to understand that at certain times it is okay to bark.
A last resort and I mean last resort would be to use a shock collar.Personally I don't care for them and
prefer to use more humane methods. But whatever method you choose be persistent.Your dog will learn in time
to stop barking.
