Stop Dog Whining
Giving in to your dog everytime he whines will only reinforce his bad behavior.Pretty soon he will have you wrapped around his paw.Early on in your relationship with your dog you are going to have to establish the ground rules of what is and what is not acceptable. He is going to have to learn whining to go out to potty is good.Whining because he wants your dinner is bad.You will have to be observant of the times when he whines.If it is when he needs to go outside then of course let him out and praise him for the good dog he is. But if he whines because he is just bored then it is time to give him something to do.Just a simple command to come or sit may be all it takes to get his mind off of it and stop his whining.Just make sure that you praise him when he does come when called. When he does whine you could also try putting him in his crate or kennel if he has one or just in another room away from you..Make sure that his crate is his special spot,with lots of his toys, nice soft blankets,whatever will keep him occupied for awhile.Soon enough he will learn that going in his crate is a good thing because it is a fun spot and the whining stops.
Make sure that you do spend quality time with him.Just like people, dogs need social interaction too.Take him for long walks to interesting doggie spots,play catch or even hide and seek.Whatever you two decide to do,do it on your terms and time frame. Otherwise he will get the wrong idea if you react to his whining by giving him attention right then and there.That will only reinforce his whining. If your dog is a serious professional whiner,it may be time for some shock therapy.To break him of his habit,when he begins to whine, make an unusual noise to get his attention.This can be something as simple as a can with pebbles inside that you shake at him.Or even a small piece of chain that you can throw down near him to startle him. If your dog whines for no apparent reason and you suspect that he may be hurting,get him to a vet as soon as possible .Whining in this situation could mean something serious and shouldn't be overlooked.Other than a physical reason whining shouldn't be tolerated.Don't give in when he starts to whine as this will only make things worse.Get the upper hand from the start and out smart him.
