Stopping Your Dog From Licking
It might be funny to you to get "kisses" from your dog,but you really need to learn how to stop your dog
from licking. It can be annoying to your family, friends and visitors when your pup won't quit licking their
hands.Yes,you know that he doesn't mean anything by it but even still it can bug other people.
While a dog giving out licks is certainly
not as bad as biting or jumping up on someone,it is a habit that needs to be controlled. If for no other reason
than it can be uncomfortable for the aforementioned guests.
Assuming that you get your dog when he is a pup, that obviously is the best time to start teaching him what is
and what is not acceptable as far as licking is concerned. If you allow him to jump up on you when you come
home, then it doesn't take a genius to figure out that "kisses" might be alright too!
I think you can see where I am going with this.
He doesn't understand why he can't spread a little love.
This is the exact point where setting the limts come in to play. With an older dog it may be harder but it should
still be possible to get the idea across to him.It just may take a little longer is all.
What you can try is to simply turn away from the dog when he tries to lick you.Don't make eye contact with your
dog.Doing so will most likely only encourage him.He is excited and wants to say "HI".Yelling at the dog certainly
won't help.In fact it may have the wrong affect and just scare the dog.
When he has sufficiently calmed down, give him proper praise.A little tickle under his chin or a scratch on the
back should do.Maybe with a "Good Boy" thrown in for good measure. But if he tries to lick again, immediately turn
away and ignore him again.Include any guests or family members in the training. When your dog gets the idea that he
won't get attention from you by licking he most likely won't try it with anyone else.
Remember that, like all training of your dog, consistency is really the key to stop your dog from
licking.Reinforcing and rewarding good behaviour over and over will get the job done.
