Stop a Dog From Jumping Up
Yes it is fun, you come home, your puppy is all excited to see you, jumps up on you and says hello doggie
style. But you need to stop him from jumping up.Now it may seem cute at the time,
but later it could have disasterous and often embarrassing results.Aside from damaging someones clothes,it is
possible that your dogs claws could scratch somebody. This is especially true if your dog is a larger breed. You
wouldn't want old Aunt Martha to be knocked down when she comes to visit.Neither would you want your toddler to be
bounced around by Brutus.I think you get the idea. You need to stop your dog from
jumping up!
Like most training of your pet, the time to start this training is when your dog is
still a pup.The key will be to catch your dog when does attempt to jump up on you.Begin,as with
most all training, with a firm but positive tone of command saying "No Jump" just as he is trying to raise up.You
could possibly use "Off",but only if you don't use that to tell to stay off or get off the furniture. What ever you
decide to use be consistent.
I wouldn't recommend the "Down" command especially if you have already established this the command to lay
down. That will most likely just confuse him.
With larger dogs you might have success when he attempts to jump up by catching his front paws and holding them
while giving your "No Jump" command.Holding his paws won't hurt him but he probably
won't find it too comfortable either and will quickly decide on his own to get down. After a few times at this he
will get frustrated when you discourage him this way.

Up
Another option ,one that visitors can help out with, is too simply raise up your knee just as he starts to jump
up while giving the "No Jump" command. Now you aren't trying
to do martial arts with your dog ,simply encouraging him to stay down.Again, after a few attempts he should get the
message and stay down. With smaller dogs you may need the help of a second person.
Attach a leash to his collar and have someone hold the other end. When your dog tries to jump up have the second person gently tug on the leash while you say "No Jump".This should give him
the idea not to jump.
As with all training, consistency is what is needed from you when training your dog not to jump up.Take your
time, say the commands in a firm tone of voice, not an angry one. When he does as directed give him lots of
praise. That in itself will go a long way towards the end goal of having a well mannered dog.
