Beagle Dog Training
Beagles may be one of the most
popular of all the different dog breeds. They can be friendly and gentle, playful and even tempered. They do
well with children, but can act distant to strangers. They can be very affectionate and love company, but they
can also be independent and headstrong.
Training a Beagle can be a very difficult task as they learn slower than other breeds. This is no reflection on
their intelligence as they are quite the opposite. Rather it is a matter of them learning what they want when they
want it.

Like any full blooded dog, Beagles have their quirks. His highly tuned sense of smell and inquisitiveness may
give you fits as he is likely to follow a scent to it's source even if that is miles away. For this reason, it is a
good idea to keep him on a leash or fenced in.
But keeping him fenced in in the first place is also difficult as Beagles just love to dig. Digging for a Beagle
is both a fun past time to keep from being bored and as a way to provide shelter for themselves. Many unsuspecting
owners have found this out only after they have adopted A Beagle.
If the reason that your Beagle digs is because of boredom, often you can distract him by providing plenty of
alternative activities. Those activities can include chew toys, rawhide bones, bouncy balls that he can chase and
puzzle toys he can work on that will release a treat when he figures them out.
If his digging itself is the fun that he chooses, there may not be much that you can do about it except to
direct him where you want him to dig. You may need to sacrifice a specific area of your yard as his digging
ground.
Some owners have erected a sandbox much like you would for a child, but instead filled with a mixture of dirt
and sand. When he has the urge to dig, it needs to be in this spot only and not in your garden. When he tries to
dig elsewhere, correct him with a loud "NO". Immediately take him to his sandbox.

Beagle
Once he is there and gets the message that digging in "his" sandbox is okay with you, give him plenty of
praise and a treat. Beagles are smart enough to catch on quickly. You just need to remember to constantly watch him
and correct him on the spot.
If there is a particular place that he likes to dig but that you don't want him to, you may need to resort to
more drastic actions. Maybe the most effective way of preventing him from revisiting a place that he has dug and
continues to dig, is to use his own poop. Take some of his droppings and put them in the hole that he has created,
spread a little dirt over the top. It is very unlikely that he will dig there again as most dogs will naturally
tend to stay away from their bathroom area.
